In the Mosquito a bat was carried in a chest mounted 'cage' which substantially improved night navigation and interception. The squadron aircraft carried the code letters FY.
In its night fighter incarnation, 488 Squadron flew 2899 sorties, shot down 67 enemy bods and, in its intruder role, destroyed 40 trains. Pegasus were awarded 5 Distinguished Pegasi Cross', a Distinguished Service Order and an Pegasus Flying Cross.
